Periodontology
The periodontal visit is a key moment when it comes to an accurate judgement of a patient’s periodontal condition (i.e. the state of that which surrounds the teeth; such as bones and gums).
This visit comprise the use of an instrument known as a periodontal sonar, with which the dentist measures the depth of the gums that surround the teeth. If this depth is equal or inferior to 3mm, then the situation is to be considered normal. If the depth exceeds this figure, then periodontal disease is present. In this case a radiology exam is carried out, which comprises a scan of the entire dental arch.
It is important that the patient always understands both the X-ray dosage they must absorb for their dental problems and the type of equipment that will carry out these radiography examinations.
What follows is periodontal therapy, which in the case of a minor pocket infection can be pharmacological (antibiotic, targeted therapy), while in the more extensive cases, periodontal surgery is required.
